A tragic incident occurred on Thursday morning in Bihar's Supaul district, where a 62-year-old grocery trader lost his life after being struck by a speeding car that was fleeing from police. The vehicle was allegedly transporting Nepali liquor.
Details of the Incident
The deceased, identified as Manoj Kumar, had just dropped his granddaughter at school and was on his way to open his shop at Ratanpura Chowk. The accident took place on National Highway 106 near Nai Bazaar, under the Ratanpura police station area.
Police Chase and Collision
According to police officials, the Ratanpura Station House Officer (SHO) was on routine patrol around 6 am when a suspicious car sped away upon noticing the police near Ratanpura Chowk. During the ensuing chase, the vehicle first collided with a tractor and then struck Manoj, who was walking along the roadside.
Local residents rushed him to the referral hospital in Ragopur, where doctors provided initial treatment. However, he succumbed to his injuries while being transferred to a higher medical facility.
Arrests and Seizure
Ratanpura SHO Pintu Kumar stated that the two occupants abandoned the car and attempted to flee into a nearby maize field but were apprehended. The suspects have been identified as Abhishek Kumar and Vipin Kumar. Police seized approximately 1,050 bottles (around 315 litres) of Nepali country-made liquor from the vehicle, which was intended for delivery in Simrahi.
Legal Action
A case has been registered against the accused under relevant sections of the law, and further investigation is underway. The incident highlights the dangers of high-speed police chases and the illicit liquor trade in the region.
