The district administration in Gurgaon is preparing to launch an extensive crackdown on illegal parking along the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. This initiative comes after the demolition of dozens of unauthorized dhabas, puncture repair shops, and temporary structures on the high-speed corridor. Illegal parking has been identified as one of the primary causes of fatal accidents on this route.
Renewed Focus on Safety
The renewed emphasis on safety follows repeated incidents of trucks and heavy commercial vehicles stopping on the highway shoulders, despite a complete prohibition on halting or parking on access-controlled expressways. Officials have noted that such violations significantly reduce reaction times for oncoming vehicles, often leading to deadly multi-vehicle collisions. Authorities have stated that illegal parking remains the most critical unresolved danger on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway.
A recent tragic crash on the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal Expressway, which claimed the lives of five people, including four Uttar Pradesh Police personnel, has brought the issue into sharper focus. Preliminary investigations suggested that a parked vehicle on the roadside was a contributing factor in that accident.
Inspection and Immediate Action
On Monday, Nuh Superintendent of Police Arpit Jain conducted an inspection of the entire expressway stretch under the district, from Nuh Sadar police station limits to the Firozpur Jhirka border. He was accompanied by station house officers, road safety officials, and representatives from district-level agencies. The team reviewed illegal parking spots, roadside activities, and existing safety measures.
During the inspection, Jain discovered several vehicles parked illegally on the shoulders and issued on-the-spot directives for their immediate removal. He emphasized, "No unauthorized parking will be permitted anywhere on the expressway, and maintaining seamless traffic flow is a top priority for the administration."
Persistent Complaints and Recent Accidents
Police officials have reported that complaints have been pouring in for months regarding truckers stopping their vehicles along the route, increasing the likelihood of crashes. Temporary dhabas and roadside shops often create congested areas where heavy vehicles park haphazardly, disrupting high-speed traffic. The severity of the problem was underscored on Saturday itself, when two separate accidents occurred on different parts of the corridor. The route has already been flagged as accident-prone in the district due to frequent high-impact collisions.
Demolition Drive Against Illegal Structures
Earlier this week, the administration launched a major demolition drive along the expressway to clear illegal structures that encourage unsafe stoppages. Starting from Nuh Sadar on Thursday, teams of police and enforcement officials removed unauthorized dhabas, hotels, puncture shops, and makeshift shelters. The campaign extended through Rozka Meo, Pinangwan, Nuh, Nagina, and Firozpur Jhirka.
Officials explained that roadside eateries and shops had become hubs for truckers and commercial drivers to halt their vehicles, creating long queues on the shoulder and escalating accident risks. With vehicles passing at high speeds, even a momentary obstruction can lead to catastrophic collisions. The administration remains committed to enforcing traffic regulations and ensuring the safety of all road users on this vital expressway.
