Karnataka selects three sites for global tourism hub development
Karnataka Tourism Minister K J George announced on 7 July 2026 that the state has shortlisted Hampi, Mysuru, and Lakkundi as potential sites to be developed into a global tourism hub. The selected destination will receive focused investment through public-private partnerships to achieve world-class infrastructure and international appeal.
Minister outlines investment strategy
Speaking to reporters, George stated that the state government aims to attract significant private capital to transform the chosen location into a top-tier tourist destination. “We are evaluating each site’s heritage value, connectivity, and potential for sustainable tourism growth,” he said. The initiative is part of Karnataka’s broader strategy to boost tourism revenue and create jobs.
Heritage and cultural significance of contenders
Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is renowned for its Vijayanagara Empire ruins. Mysuru boasts the iconic Mysore Palace and Dasara festival. Lakkundi, a lesser-known temple town in Gadag district, features Chalukya-era architecture. Each offers unique cultural and historical assets that could attract global visitors.
Expected impact on local economy
The development is expected to generate employment and improve infrastructure such as roads, airports, and hospitality services. The minister emphasized that the project aligns with the central government’s ‘Incredible India 2.0’ campaign. A final decision on the hub location is anticipated within six months after feasibility studies.
