A tragic incident occurred in Sirsa district on Tuesday evening when a house collapsed while being lifted with hydraulic jacks, resulting in the death of a labourer and injuries to two others. The accident took place in Gudia Khera village under Nathusari Chopta area, where renovation work was underway to raise the height of the structure.
Victims and rescue operations
The deceased was identified as Manoj Kumar, a native of Raipur in Uttar Pradesh. The injured labourers, Vicky and Siddharth, were rushed to a hospital, and one of them was later referred to Hisar due to his critical condition. According to police, the accident happened around 5:30 pm when one side wall of the house suddenly gave way, causing the entire structure to collapse. Three labourers working inside were trapped under the debris. Upon receiving information, fire brigade teams, ambulances, and personnel from Jamal police outpost arrived at the scene. With the help of local residents and a JCB machine, rescue operations were launched, and the trapped workers were pulled out from the rubble.
Details of the renovation work
The house belonged to Atma Ram, a resident of Gudia Khera village, and was located in agricultural fields nearly one kilometre from the village. Due to moisture and sinking issues in the area, the owner had reportedly hired a contractor to elevate the structure using jacks. Police said the contractor, Ashok Kumar, had been carrying out the work with a team of labourers for the past six days. At the time of the incident, three workers were engaged inside the house in the lifting process. Vaneet Kumar, also from Raipur and associated with the workers, stated that the labourers were raising the structure with the help of jacks when the wall suddenly collapsed, burying them under the debris.
Police investigation and background
Police said the area is prone to dampness, and the condition of the house was already weak. "The accident occurred while the structure was being raised with jacks. One labourer died in the incident, while two sustained injuries. Further investigation is under way," a police official stated. The incident highlights the risks involved in such renovation practices, especially in moisture-prone areas with weak structural foundations.
