In the aftermath of the tragic Ujjain-Shajapur bus fire that resulted in the death of a four-year-old boy, authorities in Indore launched a joint crackdown on buses at Star Square on Tuesday. The operation led to fines totaling Rs 2.26 lakh on eight vehicles and the cancellation of fitness certificates for two others.
Operation Details
The crackdown was ordered by Indore Collector Shivam Verma and executed by a team comprising RTO Pradeep Sharma, SDM Ghanshyam Dhangar, ARTO Rajesh Gupta, and flying squad in-charge Akash Sithole. The team inspected all India tourist buses and other public transport vehicles for compliance with safety regulations.
Safety Checks Conducted
The inspection focused on emergency exits, fire extinguishers, and passenger evacuation systems. Buses that had blocked emergency exits or non-functional fire extinguishers had their fitness certificates cancelled. Other vehicles were penalized for incomplete documentation and for operating illegally as stage carriages under tourist permits.
Drivers and conductors were issued stern warnings against carrying flammable materials on board. They were also instructed to brief passengers on emergency procedures, including the use of exits and window-breaking hammers, modeled after pre-flight safety demonstrations seen in airlines.
This action underscores the authorities' commitment to enhancing passenger safety and preventing similar tragedies in the future. The joint operation serves as a reminder for all transport operators to adhere strictly to safety norms.
