The Indore Municipal Corporation on Friday initiated a large-scale demolition operation in the Chhawani area as part of efforts to widen a crucial road under the city's Master Plan. A substantial police force, along with earthmoving equipment, was deployed to remove structures identified as encroachments.
City-Wide Initiative for Traffic Improvement
This drive is a component of a broader city-wide initiative aimed at clearing public footpaths, removing unauthorized stalls, and seizing illegally parked vehicles to facilitate smoother traffic and pedestrian movement. The removal squad began operations early in the morning, focusing on homes and structures falling within the proposed road alignment. According to officials, residents were served prior notices before the action commenced.
Details of the Demolition Drive
An official release stated that approximately 124 structures were removed using 17 earthmovers. The removal team consisted of over 150 officials and workers, supported by an equal number of police personnel. Debris from the demolition was cleared using 15 dumper trucks to ease vehicle movement.
Mayor's Statement on Development
Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav, who visited the area a few days earlier to assess the situation and speak with residents, remarked, "These roads are extremely important from the perspective of the city's development and the Master Plan." He noted that despite being given adequate time and notices, residents had not removed the illegal constructions and obstructions hindering the road. He emphasized that ensuring the timely construction of Master Plan roads is the corporation's responsibility and that the drive would continue until the task is complete.
Revised Road Width After Consultations
The road, initially proposed to be widened to 80 feet, will now be expanded to 60 feet following resistance from local residents. This revised plan reflects a compromise reached after consultations with the community.
