Jhansi: Following a recent altercation between junior resident doctors and advocates in Prayagraj, and the arrest of a junior resident from his hometown in Rampur, resident doctors at Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College staged a protest outside the emergency department on Wednesday. The demonstration was part of a statewide strike called by the Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA). The strike began at 8:00 am and was called off by 2:30 pm after assurances of a proper investigation.
The protesting doctors claimed that more than 36 hours had passed since the detention of a second-year surgery resident, but he had neither been released nor had any information regarding his whereabouts been provided to them. The protest is linked to a recent incident involving an alleged altercation with lawyers in Prayagraj. The resident doctors alleged that police action was taken solely based on one party’s complaint.
Members of the RDA gathered outside the emergency ward and raised slogans demanding transparency in the matter and the immediate release of their colleague. Principal of the Medical College, Dr. Sudhir Kumar, stated that despite the strike, medical students ensured that the emergency section and intensive care unit (ICU) were not affected, and services continued uninterrupted.
