Kalyan-Dombivli Transforms Garbage Spots into Green Havens
Kalyan-Dombivli Turns Garbage Points into Green Spaces

The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation has launched an innovative campaign to transform unsightly garbage dumping zones into beautiful public spaces, marking a significant step toward urban cleanliness and aesthetic improvement.

Combatting Open Garbage Dumping

Under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner Abhinav Goel, the Solid Waste Management Department is targeting locations repeatedly misused for waste disposal, officially termed as Garbage Vulnerable Points (GVPs). The initiative aims to completely eliminate open dumping across the twin cities.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Solid Waste Management, Ramdas Kokre, the department identified that most illegal dumping occurs during nighttime in open areas. In response, the corporation has extended its ghantagadi waste collection services into night hours to address this specific pattern.

Beautification Strategy and Implementation

The transformation of GVPs has already commenced at three key locations: Barave Water Treatment Plant area, Barave village, and Thakurli East station road. Each site is being revitalized through colorful rangoli patterns, artistic wall murals, decorative planters crafted from recycled tires, and ornamental plants.

The cleaning operations are distributed between municipal staff handling three wards and contractor Sumeet Elkoplast managing the remaining seven wards. This coordinated effort ensures comprehensive coverage across different areas of the municipal corporation.

Long-term Vision and Citizen Participation

The corporation has set an ambitious goal to convert all GVPs throughout Kalyan-Dombivli into clean, green spots within the coming months. This campaign builds upon previous waste management improvements, including the May 2020 removal of approximately 3,700 garbage bins and the introduction of door-to-door collection via ghantagadi.

Deputy Commissioner Kokre has appealed to residents to hand over waste exclusively to municipal ghantagadi vans rather than discarding it on roads, open plots, or public spaces. He also emphasized the importance of waste segregation at home and community cooperation to prevent new dirty spots from emerging in neighborhoods.

This comprehensive approach not only strengthens urban cleanliness but also contributes to creating attractive green corners, significantly enhancing the overall beauty and environmental health of Kalyan-Dombivli.
