Kanpur's 94km Ring Road Project Aims to Slash City Traffic by 60%
In a significant move to alleviate chronic traffic congestion, Kanpur is constructing a 94-kilometer Ring Road around the city. On Friday, regional project manager Gautam Vishal conducted an inspection of package one to evaluate the ongoing progress. This ambitious infrastructure initiative is designed to transform urban mobility and connectivity in the region.
Construction Progress and Timeline Updates
The construction of package one is advancing steadily, with 10 kilometers of the road already finished. Officials have reported that this segment is on track for completion by September 2026. However, the project has encountered some delays in other sections. Package 2-A, located near Bithoor in Unnao district, will not meet its initial target of November 30, 2025, due to unforeseen challenges. Consequently, this segment is now expected to be finalized by 2028.
Despite this setback, the overall Ring Road project remains scheduled for inauguration in 2027. During a meeting held at the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) camp office in Sachendi, regional project director Gautam Vishal discussed these updates with departmental engineers, emphasizing the commitment to timely execution.
Key Features and Connectivity Benefits
The six-lane Ring Road is projected to reduce internal traffic congestion in Kanpur by an impressive 60%. This reduction is anticipated to save both time and fuel for daily commuters. The road will serve as a major arterial link, connecting five national highways and two state highways, thereby streamlining regional travel.
Starting in April, the Ring Road will also integrate with the Kanpur-Lucknow Expressway, ensuring smoother intercity travel and further diminishing inner-city traffic issues for residents. Enhanced connectivity is expected to boost industrial zones, facilitate easier access to the airport, and support upcoming government projects, providing a substantial push to local trade and industry.
Major Infrastructure Components: Bridges and Airport Link
A highlight of the Ring Road project is the construction of two large bridges over the Ganga River. One bridge, spanning 3,300 meters, is situated near Khushhalpur village behind Ganga Valley in Bithoor. The other is located near Kanha Gaushala by the airport in Chakeri. These bridges will play a crucial role in enhancing cross-river connectivity and reducing travel times.
Additionally, a dedicated service road will link the Ring Road to the airport, making travel more convenient for airport users. This integration is poised to improve logistics and accessibility for both passengers and cargo operations.
