Kanyakumari Collector Directs Monsoon Preparedness
Kanyakumari district collector R Alagumeeena has issued directives to all departmental officers to remain on standby for the upcoming southwest monsoon and ensure adequate emergency resources are available. The collector held a review meeting with departmental officers on Thursday to discuss precautionary measures for the monsoon season.
Key Measures for Low-Lying Areas and Relief Centres
The collector instructed officials to identify low-lying areas that are vulnerable to rain damage. Relief centres must be kept ready with detailed information, including mobile numbers of officers in charge. First-level rescue officers should be on standby to safely shelter the public when needed. Essential items such as mats and blankets for those accommodated in temporary shelters must be ensured, she added.
24/7 Control Rooms and Dam Water Levels
Control rooms must be established at taluk offices to function 24 hours during the monsoon season. The collector also directed water resources department engineers to maintain the water level of Pechiparai dam at 43 feet and Perunchani dam at 71 feet throughout the monsoon season.
Electrical Safety and Educational Institutions
She instructed Tamil Nadu Electricity Board personnel to inspect high-tension and low-tension electrical connections and replace damaged electric poles. Schools and colleges must be kept ready for establishing relief camps and medical aid centres. Students from Thiruvattar taluk and Pechiparai area who travel to school by boat should be advised not to use boats for three months and instead stay in their respective school hostels.
Restrictions on Public Access
The collector ordered forest department personnel to prohibit public visits to hill areas during the monsoon season. Tourism department personnel must take measures to prevent gatherings at tourist spots when heavy rain or very heavy rain warnings are issued, as well as on days of high sea turbulence.
These comprehensive measures aim to ensure the safety and preparedness of the district during the monsoon season.
