Karnataka DCM warns against pressuring VAOs, transfer policy sought

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister (DCM) has issued a stern warning that action will be taken if officials are found pressuring Village Administrative Officers (VAOs). The statement comes in response to concerns raised by the Karnataka State Village Administrative Officers' Association.

Association demands inter-district transfers

Association president Yogesh Naik urged the government to introduce inter-district transfers for VAOs, citing current transfer policies as inadequate. He argued that the lack of such transfers leads to prolonged postings in one location, which can result in undue influence from local officials.

Naik emphasized that inter-district transfers would ensure greater autonomy and reduce the risk of pressure from higher authorities. The association has been pushing for this reform to improve the working conditions of VAOs across the state.

DCM's response and assurance

The Deputy CM assured that the government is committed to protecting VAOs from any form of coercion. "If any official is found pressuring a VAO, strict disciplinary action will be taken," the DCM stated. The warning is seen as a move to reinforce the independence of VAOs in performing their duties.

The DCM also acknowledged the association's demand for inter-district transfers and promised to consider the proposal. He noted that a transparent transfer policy would benefit both the officers and the administration.

VAOs play a crucial role in rural administration, handling land records and revenue collection. Ensuring their independence is vital for efficient governance at the grassroots level.
