Kochi Corporation Takes Action on Sanitary Waste Disposal Crisis

In a decisive move to combat the growing issue of sanitary napkin and diaper waste accumulation in households, the Kochi Corporation has approved funding for a private agency responsible for operating the local body's incinerator facility at Brahmapuram. This step comes as a response to the failure of waste collection agencies to manage this specific type of waste, leading to unsightly piles at material collection facilities and on city streets.

Root Causes of the Waste Pile-Up

The problem stemmed from a lack of functional incinerators, which are essential for the proper disposal of sanitary products. Agencies tasked with collecting napkin and diaper waste were unable to perform their duties effectively, resulting in a buildup that posed hygiene and environmental concerns. The private firm operating the incinerator had raised demands for additional funds to cover diesel procurement, as well as operation and maintenance charges outlined in their agreement.

Government Intervention and Temporary Solution

Mayor V K Minimol addressed the situation, stating that the corporation sought guidance from the state government. The response clarified that operation and maintenance charges should inherently include fuel costs, rendering the private firm's claim invalid. Consequently, the corporation plans to invite fresh tenders to identify a more suitable operator for the incinerator, but this process will be deferred until after the upcoming assembly elections.

To provide immediate relief, the corporation has decided to allocate funds to the existing private agency for purchasing fuel to operate the incinerator over the next three months. This trial period will allow for continued waste management while preparations are made for the new tender process. Mayor Minimol emphasized that this interim measure aims to prevent further waste accumulation and ensure public health and cleanliness in Kochi.

Future Steps and Long-Term Strategy

Following the three-month trial, the corporation will proceed with inviting fresh tenders to secure a permanent and efficient operator for the Brahmapuram incinerator. This approach underscores the local body's commitment to resolving waste management challenges and improving urban sanitation standards. The move is expected to alleviate the strain on households and contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable environment in the region.
