Kolkata Police has imposed a ban on gatherings near strong rooms in the city after a controversy erupted over alleged Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) tampering. The decision comes in the wake of a late-night drama involving the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), both accusing each other of attempting to manipulate the voting machines.
Background of the EVM Tampering Allegations
The row began when TMC leaders claimed that BJP workers were trying to tamper with EVMs stored in strong rooms. In response, BJP accused TMC of staging a false narrative to cover up their own alleged malpractices. The situation escalated late at night, with both parties holding protests near the strong rooms, prompting police intervention.
Police Action and Restrictions
To prevent any untoward incidents, Kolkata Police issued an order prohibiting any assembly of people within a certain radius of the strong rooms. The police have also deployed additional forces to ensure the security of the EVMs. A senior police official stated, "We are committed to maintaining law and order and ensuring the integrity of the electoral process. Any violation of the ban will be dealt with strictly."

TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh welcomed the police action, saying, "This is a necessary step to protect the democratic process. We have full faith in the Election Commission and the police." On the other hand, BJP leader Rahul Sinha criticized the ban, alleging that it was an attempt to shield TMC from scrutiny. "The police are acting at the behest of the state government. We demand a free and fair investigation," he said.
Election Commission's Stance
The Election Commission of India has taken note of the developments and has sought a detailed report from the state administration. A Commission spokesperson said, "We are closely monitoring the situation. Any attempt to tamper with EVMs will be dealt with severely. We have directed the police to ensure the safety of all electoral materials."
The controversy has added to the tension in West Bengal, which is gearing up for the next phase of assembly elections. Both TMC and BJP have been locked in a fierce battle for control of the state, with allegations of electoral malpractices becoming increasingly common.
