A 30-year-old labourer died after falling from the 20th floor of an under-construction building in Mumbai, prompting police to register a case against the contractor and two others for alleged negligence, an official said on Thursday.
The incident occurred on Wednesday night in the Evershine Nagar area of Malad (West), a western suburb of Mumbai. The victim, identified as Manoj Ghurhu Gupta, was attempting to board an elevator to descend from the 20th floor after completing his work shift, according to an official from Bangur Nagar police station.
Preliminary investigations suggest that due to inadequate safety measures at the site and poor lighting conditions, Gupta lost his balance and fell through a gap between the elevator shaft and the adjacent wall. He sustained severe injuries and died on the spot.
A case has been registered against the contractor, site supervisor, and safety supervisor for negligence, as they allegedly failed to provide adequate safety measures at the construction site. An investigation is underway, the official added.
