Ladakh LG Approves Wage Hike: Skilled Workers to Get Rs 575/Day
Ladakh LG Approves Wage Hike for Skilled Workers

Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Brigadier (retd) B D Mishra, has given his approval for a significant hike in daily wages for workers in the region. The revised wage structure will see skilled workers receiving Rs 575 per day, an increase from the previous rate. Unskilled workers will now earn Rs 300 per day, while semi-skilled workers will get Rs 400 per day. This decision is expected to benefit a large number of laborers and craftsmen across Ladakh.

Details of the Wage Revision

The order, issued by the Office of the Lieutenant Governor, specifies that the new wage rates will be applicable with immediate effect. The hike is part of the government's ongoing efforts to improve the livelihood of workers and ensure fair compensation for their skills and labor. The revised rates are as follows:

  • Skilled workers: Rs 575 per day (previously Rs 500)
  • Semi-skilled workers: Rs 400 per day (previously Rs 350)
  • Unskilled workers: Rs 300 per day (previously Rs 250)

The increase amounts to a 15% rise for skilled workers, while semi-skilled and unskilled workers receive a 14.3% and 20% hike, respectively. This move aligns with the government's commitment to enhancing the standard of living for the working class.

Impact on Workers and Economy

The wage revision is anticipated to have a positive impact on the local economy by increasing the purchasing power of workers. It will also help in reducing income inequality and providing a safety net for the most vulnerable sections of society. Many workers in Ladakh are employed in construction, agriculture, and small-scale industries, and this hike will provide them with much-needed financial relief.

Local trade unions and worker associations have welcomed the decision, stating that it will boost morale and productivity. However, some employers have expressed concerns about increased operational costs, especially for small businesses. The government has assured that it will monitor the implementation and address any issues that arise.

The Lieutenant Governor's office has directed all departments and agencies to ensure compliance with the new wage rates. The order also emphasizes the need for timely payment of wages and strict action against any violations. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to promote social justice and economic development in the Union Territory of Ladakh.
