Madikeri villagers halt road work, demand redo

Madikeri: Residents of Inakanahalli and Alekatte villages in Somwarpet taluk have halted road construction work, alleging substandard quality. The over 2 km stretch from Inkanahalli to Alekatte was in a pitiable condition, prompting the sanction of Rs 2 crore to rebuild the cement road. According to the tender, the old cement road was to be completely peeled off and fresh concrete laid. However, villagers claim the concrete work was carried out hastily overnight.

Villagers Raise Concerns

B Anil, a resident, stated that concrete was laid at night using only vehicle lights, from 7 pm to midnight. He noted that the tender required concrete to be laid using precast pavers, but workers were laying concrete by hand without machinery. He further alleged that concrete was being placed directly on soil in several places, indicating poor workmanship.

A large group of villagers gathered at the site and demanded the presence of officials. PWD engineer Kumar visited and inspected the road work. Villagers confronted him, insisting that he remain present throughout the construction.
