Madurai Arapalayam Bus Stand Faces Parking and Sewage Issues
Madurai Bus Stand Hit by Parking Crunch and Sewage Woes

The Arapalayam bus stand in Madurai is grappling with severe parking shortages and overflowing sewage, creating immense hardships for the public. Two-wheeler commuters find it extremely difficult to secure parking spots in the limited paid parking lot, often being forced to leave their vehicles on narrow roads. This leads to significant traffic disruptions as buses struggle to navigate through the parked vehicles, causing delays for other motorists.

Parking Woes and Price Hikes

The paid parking area is perpetually full. Despite an increase in charges from Rs 8 to Rs 10 aimed at reducing demand, approximately 20% to 30% of vehicles are turned away daily due to lack of space. On weekends, this figure exceeds 50%, according to Sivasubramanian, a regular commuter. He noted that even higher prices have not alleviated the problem.

Flooding and Sludge During Rains

Another commuter, Pandi, highlighted that the parking area is lower than the road level, causing it to flood during rains. The unpaved surface turns into sludge, making it nearly impossible to retrieve vehicles. Many riders slip and fall in the muck. Pedestrians and bus passengers also suffer as rainwater floods the roads.

Sewage Overflow and Open Defecation

An underground drainage (UGD) pipeline, which serves a Swachh Bharat washroom and a nearby restaurant, frequently overflows, flooding the road with sewage. An autorickshaw driver reported that the overflow sometimes covers the entire road. When mixed with rainwater, the situation becomes even more hazardous. The poor maintenance of Swachh Bharat toilets has led to open defecation in the area. Although contractors charge Rs 5 to Rs 10 for using the washrooms, they are not kept clean, said Pandi.

Lack of Action by Authorities

Autorickshaw drivers claim they have repeatedly requested authorities to repair the UGD pipeline, but no action has been taken to replace it. The persistent neglect has left commuters and local residents frustrated, demanding immediate intervention to resolve these critical issues.
