Manipur Government Sets Ambitious Target for Displaced Persons Resettlement

In a significant announcement from Imphal, Manipur Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel revealed on Thursday that the state government is actively working toward resettling more than 10,000 displaced families by March 2026. This ambitious initiative aims to provide stable living conditions for over 40,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) who have been affected by various circumstances in the region.

Government's Commitment to Timely Rehabilitation

Reiterating the government's unwavering commitment to the timely and secure rehabilitation of IDPs across Manipur, Goel emphasized that both state-level and district-level committees are meeting regularly to monitor the rehabilitation process. These committees are conducting rigorous reviews to ensure that the resettlement efforts proceed smoothly and effectively, with a focus on restoring normalcy to the lives of displaced individuals and families.

The primary objective of this comprehensive rehabilitation program is to gradually and securely resettle IDPs, restore stable living conditions, and enable the resumption of livelihoods, education, and normal community life. This holistic approach recognizes that true rehabilitation extends beyond mere housing to encompass economic stability and social integration.

Substantial Progress Already Achieved

According to official statements released by the chief secretary's office, significant progress has already been made in this direction. By December 2025, more than 2,200 families comprising approximately 10,000 IDPs had been successfully resettled in various locations across the state.

To build upon this momentum and accelerate the rehabilitation process, the government has sanctioned approximately 7,000 houses under the Special PMAY-G (Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin) scheme specifically for the reconstruction of fully damaged homes. These housing units are currently at various stages of completion, with construction progressing steadily across multiple districts.

Financial Allocation and Implementation Status

The financial commitment to this massive resettlement effort is substantial, with the government having released approximately Rs 124 crore for various resettlement activities across different locations in Manipur. This funding has already facilitated the successful resettlement of around 3,700 families, consisting of about 16,500 IDPs, who have been provided with new homes and support systems.

The government remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring the timely and safe rehabilitation of all displaced persons in Manipur at the earliest possible opportunity. Regular monitoring, transparent implementation, and community engagement form the cornerstone of this comprehensive resettlement strategy that seeks to address both immediate housing needs and long-term community rebuilding.
