Meghalaya CEO Confirms Readiness for Electoral Rolls Revision
Meghalaya CEO: Ready for Electoral Rolls Revision

Shillong: Meghalaya chief electoral officer (CEO) BDR Tiwari on Saturday confirmed that the state election commission is fully prepared for the upcoming Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. This exercise aims to update and correct the voter list in the state.

Background of the Revision

On Thursday, the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the third phase of SIR for the remaining states and Union Territories, including Meghalaya. October 1 has been designated as the qualifying date for the revision in the state. This means that individuals who turn 18 on or before that date will be eligible to register as voters.

Key Dates and Activities

According to Tiwari, the revision process will begin with a house-to-house survey conducted by booth level officers (BLOs) from June 30 to July 29. This survey will cover all polling stations across Meghalaya. The draft electoral roll is scheduled to be published on August 5, allowing citizens to review the list and file claims or objections. The period for filing claims and objections will remain open until September 4. Following the resolution of all claims and objections, the final electoral roll will be published on October 7.

Tiwari emphasized the importance of this revision in ensuring accurate and updated voter lists, which are crucial for free and fair elections. He urged citizens to cooperate with BLOs during the survey and to promptly report any discrepancies or missing entries.

This revision is part of the ECI's ongoing efforts to maintain clean electoral rolls across the country. The process will help include new voters, remove deceased or shifted individuals, and correct any errors in the existing rolls.
