Minority Commission Reviews Muthalapozhi Harbour Issues

The State Minority Commission conducted a sitting to review a suo motu case concerning the recurring accidents at Muthalapozhi fishing harbour in Thiruvananthapuram. During the proceedings, the district collector informed the commission that the Chandragiri dredger, which was brought from Azhikkal Port to remove sand accumulation at the harbour mouth, sustained damage due to strong waves. Consequently, a fresh tender will be invited to carry out the dredging operations.

Breakwater Extension Progress

The district collector further stated that the extension work of the southern breakwater under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana is progressing. The length of the breakwater has already been increased by approximately 190 meters, which has helped prevent sand from entering the harbour from the southern side. Once the work is completed, it is expected to provide a permanent solution to the long-standing issues at the harbour.

Financial Assistance for Fishermen

The director of fisheries informed the commission that 2,433 fishermen, who were unable to venture into the sea due to the harbour closure, were provided financial assistance for 91 days at a daily rate of Rs 359. This support aimed to mitigate the economic impact on the fishing community.
