The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) chief M Maheshwar Rao has announced that more dog feeding spots will be identified across all wards in Bengaluru. The decision comes as part of efforts to manage the city's community dog population more humanely and systematically.
Additional Feeding Spots Based on Dog Numbers
Speaking to the media, Rao stated that the number of feeding spots in each ward will be determined by the count of community dogs residing there. Currently, each ward has a limited number of designated feeding areas, but these are often insufficient to cover the needs of all stray dogs.
“We are working with local volunteers and animal welfare groups to map the dog population accurately. Based on that data, we will identify additional spots where feeding can be done without causing inconvenience to residents or traffic,” Rao explained.
Humane Management of Stray Dogs
The initiative is part of the GBA's broader strategy to address the stray dog issue through sterilization, vaccination, and regulated feeding. The authority believes that providing adequate feeding spots will reduce conflicts between dog feeders and local residents, as well as minimize the scattering of garbage.
Rao emphasized that the new feeding spots will be chosen in consultation with resident welfare associations and municipal officials to ensure they are located in appropriate areas, away from busy roads and public spaces where they could create hygiene or safety issues.
Implementation Timeline
The GBA chief said that ward-level surveys are already underway, and the list of additional spots is expected to be finalized within the next two months. Once identified, these spots will be clearly marked and monitored by the civic body.
“We request citizens to cooperate and use only the designated spots for feeding. This will help maintain cleanliness and ensure the well-being of the dogs,” Rao added.
The announcement has been welcomed by animal rights activists, who have long demanded a more organized approach to stray dog management in the city.
