Ahmedabad: A motorcyclist died after losing control of his bike and falling from the Balolnagar bridge in the city, once again drawing attention to a spate of fatal accidents reported from the stretch in recent months.
Victim Identified
The deceased was identified as Sanjay Makwana, 30, who suffered severe head injuries after his motorcycle first struck the divider and bridge railing before he plunged off the bridge. Police said the accident occurred when Makwana was travelling from New Ranip towards Balolnagar late on Wednesday night.
Details of the Incident
According to officials, Makwana was reportedly riding at high speed when he lost control near a sharp curve on the bridge. The motorcycle initially hit the divider and then crashed into the side barricade, causing the rider to be flung off the bridge. Passersby rushed to his aid and alerted emergency services.
Makwana was taken to Sola Civil Hospital in a critical condition, where doctors declared him dead during treatment. Police said he sustained serious head injuries and heavy blood loss due to the fall.
Investigation Underway
L Division traffic police reached the spot and began an inquiry into the accident. Officers said no complaint had been registered so far, as there was no indication of involvement of another vehicle in the accident.
Recurring Safety Concerns
The latest mishap has once again raised concerns among residents over the safety of the Balolnagar bridge, particularly the sharp curve that locals claim has become a recurring accident-prone spot. Residents said this was the third major accident reported on the bridge within a month.
In January this year, a two-wheeler rider was killed while his wife was seriously injured after their scooter was allegedly hit by a speeding vehicle on the same bridge. In another recent accident, a rider had fallen from the bridge in a similar manner and died on the spot.
Demands for Safety Measures
Local residents have accused civic authorities of ignoring repeated warnings despite multiple fatal accidents. They said demands for higher protective railings, reflective warning boards and speed-calming measures have remained unattended.
