Madhya Pradesh Ends 17-Year Hiring Freeze for Food Safety Officers

In a significant development for public health administration, the state of Madhya Pradesh is poised to appoint new food safety officers for the first time in nearly two decades. The Madhya Pradesh Public Service Commission (MPPSC) has initiated the final phase of recruitment to fill 123 crucial positions, marking the end of a prolonged hiring hiatus that lasted approximately 17 years.

Interview Process and Timeline

The commission has shortlisted 480 candidates who will face interviews commencing on April 15. According to MPPSC officials, the interview process is expected to be completed within one week. Following this, the commission will prepare the final merit list, which is anticipated to be released by April 30. If the schedule remains on track, successful candidates could begin their appointments in the concerned departments as early as May.

Recruitment Journey: From Cancellation to Expansion

The recruitment process has undergone several notable changes since its inception last year. Initially, MPPSC issued a notification for 120 posts of food safety officer. However, this vacancy was subsequently cancelled, and a fresh notification was issued for only 67 posts. This reduction triggered objections and protests from aspirants. In response to these representations, the commission later increased the number of posts by adding 56 more positions, bringing the total to 123.

Examination Details and Candidate Participation

The written examination for this recruitment was conducted on December 14, 2025. Approximately 44,000 candidates registered for the examination, though only about 59 percent actually appeared for it. Based on the results declared on January 21 of this year, a total of 480 candidates have been shortlisted for the interview stage. Among these, 382 candidates are from the main list, while 98 candidates are included in the provisional list.

Selection Criteria and Marking System

According to subject experts, the interview will carry 50 marks out of the total 500 marks in the selection process. The written examination consisted of two papers: a 150-mark paper on general studies and a 300-mark paper on food science and technology. Experts emphasize that the interview stage will be particularly crucial, as even a single mark could significantly influence the final merit ranking and determine appointment outcomes.

Official Statements and Future Implications

"The interviews are expected to be completed within a week, after which the commission will prepare the final merit list," stated R Panchbhai, the Officer on Special Duty (OSD) at the commission. Officials have indicated that the final list may be released within about 10 days of the interviews. This recruitment drive is seen as a vital step to strengthen food safety mechanisms across Madhya Pradesh, addressing a critical gap in public health infrastructure that has persisted for almost two decades.
