Mumbai: 220 illegal godowns razed in Ghatkopar-Mankhurd drive

Mumbai: In a significant anti-encroachment operation, the Mumbai suburban collector’s office demolished 220 illegal godowns situated on a 14-acre plot along the Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road (GMLR). This marks the second major drive in the area, following the clearance of an 11-acre plot in April, where over 1,200 hutments were removed and handed over to central jail authorities for a proposed prison. The two plots face each other on opposite sides of GMLR.

Details of the Drive

Mumbai suburban collector Saurabh Katiyar stated that the godowns were commercial structures utilized for various goods, including scrap material. Sources indicate that demolition of godowns has occurred multiple times, with the last major operation in 2022.

To prevent re-encroachment, the collector’s office is installing tin sheet barricades around the plot and blocking access points. A senior official noted that the anti-encroachment office lacks the resources to protect the plot and has requested the state government to transfer the plot to a government agency at the earliest.
