Mumbai Implements Mandatory Police Verification for Gig Economy Workers
In a significant move to bolster public safety, the Maharashtra government has announced that contractors hiring gig workers for major food delivery platforms, along with the workers themselves, will now be required to undergo police verification. This directive was formally declared by State Labour Minister Akash Fundkar during a session in the legislative council on Wednesday.
Addressing Safety Concerns in the Gig Economy
The issue was brought to the forefront by BJP Member of the Legislative Council Chitra Wagh, who expressed serious concerns regarding women's safety in relation to gig workers. Wagh highlighted the potential risks associated with unverified individuals entering residential areas for deliveries, prompting a thorough discussion on regulatory measures.
In his response, Minister Fundkar elaborated on the current state of gig work, noting that these workers are not registered with any formal labour organisation. He explained that companies such as Zomato, Swiggy, and Blinkit typically hire through contractors, creating a gap in oversight and accountability. "This verification process is a crucial step towards ensuring transparency and security in the rapidly expanding gig economy," Fundkar stated.
Expanding Regulatory Framework for Gig Workers
Beyond police verification, the government is also taking proactive steps to bring electric vehicles used by gig workers under a regulatory framework. This initiative aims to standardize operations and enhance safety protocols across the sector. Fundkar emphasized that these measures are part of a broader effort to integrate gig workers into formal systems, addressing both security and employment concerns.
The announcement has sparked discussions among stakeholders, with many applauding the focus on safety while others call for balanced regulations that do not hinder the flexibility of gig work.
