Mysuru DC Orders Immediate Action to Curb Cauvery Pollution
Mandya: Deputy Commissioner Kumara on Monday directed officials to take immediate steps to prevent industrial effluents and untreated sewage generated within Mysuru city from entering the Cauvery River and its canal network, warning of a serious threat to drinking water sources.
Chairing a review meeting, he stressed the need for coordinated action by all departments to curb the direct discharge of wastewater into the river and canals.
He noted that polluted wastewater from industrial units is reportedly flowing through streams into the Virija Canal near Kalasthawadi village and the Devaraya Canal near Kesare. The contaminated water eventually reaches the Cauvery near the intake well supplying drinking water to Ganjam in Srirangapatna.
Expressing concern over public health, the DC instructed officials to identify pollution sources and take effective measures to stop wastewater from entering canals and the river.
Srirangapatna MLA AB Ramesh Bandisiddegowda emphasised the importance of regular water quality testing and urged departments to ensure safe drinking water. He also called for preventive steps ahead of the monsoon to stop wastewater from flowing into the Cauvery during heavy rainfall.
Additional SP Thimmaiah and other officials attended the meeting.
