Prayagraj: New Boundary Wall Narrows Road to Subedarganj Station, Sparks Safety Fears
New wall at Subedarganj station road raises safety concerns

A new construction project in Prayagraj has triggered alarm among daily commuters and local residents. The building of an extra boundary wall along the road leading to Subedarganj railway station has significantly reduced the width of the carriageway, leading to congestion and raising serious safety concerns.

Road Narrowed Ahead of Major Event

The problematic stretch is located on the Dhoomanganj side of the Subedarganj station. According to information from local sources, a boundary wall already existed along this roadside. However, the defence department is now constructing a new wall further inside, which has drastically cut down the usable width of both the main road and the service lane. This reduction is directly causing traffic bottlenecks.

When asked about the ongoing work, defence PRO Wing Commander Debartho Dhar stated he did not have specific information regarding the construction. He could not clarify the purpose behind erecting the new wall and mentioned that details would need to be sought from the concerned department.

Commuters Voice Their Frustration

With the Magh Mela just around the corner, commuters are urgently appealing to the authorities to step in and prevent further inconvenience. This development is particularly troubling given the recent history of infrastructure improvements in the area.

Ahead of the Maha Kumbh, major upgrades were undertaken to enhance connectivity to Subedarganj station. These included:

  • Construction of a new station building on the Dhoomanganj side.
  • Building a rail overbridge from Chaufatka to connect Kalindipuram.
  • Developing roads on both sides of the overbridge for smooth traffic flow.

During that period, the defence department had also built boundary walls along the road. Despite these efforts, there were calls for further road widening to handle the expected rush of pilgrims and visitors.

A Crucial Route Now Under Threat

While the newly developed road proved to be a major benefit and eased access to the station, the recent construction of the additional wall has reversed some of those gains. A local resident highlighted the road's critical role, noting it served as a lone saviour during the massive traffic chaos in the city's west during the Maha Kumbh. It was the primary route for commuters entering Prayagraj from various western localities.

"By curtailing the width of this road just 10 days before the Magh Mela, massive traffic problems are likely," the resident warned. The construction work is also adversely affecting railway employees who commute daily to the North Central Railway headquarters.

The situation presents a clear challenge for city planners and the defence authorities. With a major religious gathering imminent, the need for a swift resolution to ensure public safety and smooth traffic movement is more pressing than ever.
