The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on Wednesday demolished several houses in Duneke village near Moga as part of the construction of National Highway 105B. The demolition drive led to widespread protests by local residents, resulting in the detention of several farmers by the police.
Protest Erupts Over Demolition
Villagers gathered at the site early in the morning to oppose the demolition, alleging that NHAI had not provided adequate compensation or prior notice. They argued that the highway project would displace many families without proper rehabilitation measures. The protesters blocked the road, leading to a confrontation with the police.
Police Detain Farmers
Police detained several farmers who were leading the protest. Sources said that the detainees were taken to a nearby police station for questioning. The situation remained tense throughout the day, with heavy police presence in the area to prevent any untoward incident.
NHAI's Stand
NHAI officials stated that the demolition was carried out after due legal process and that compensation had been offered to the affected families as per the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act. They urged the villagers to cooperate with the development work.
The NH-105B project aims to improve connectivity in the region, but locals claim that the compensation package is insufficient and that alternative housing has not been provided. The issue has sparked a debate on land acquisition policies and the rights of farmers.
