NHAI Launches Massive Geotechnical Audit on NH-66 in Kerala After Safety Concerns
NHAI's Major Safety Audit for NH-66 in Kerala

In a significant move to address structural concerns, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has launched an unprecedented geotechnical evaluation exercise along the crucial NH-66 corridor in Kerala. This initiative represents one of the most extensive soil and structural investigations ever undertaken on a national highway project in the country.

Unprecedented Scale of Investigation

The authority has mobilized eighteen specialized geotechnical agencies to conduct detailed soil investigations. These probes will focus on 378 specific locations linked to various structures and reinforced soil (RS) walls. The scope encompasses the entire stretch of NH-66 within the state, covering 18 different projects that include completed sections, areas currently under construction, and projects yet to begin.

This comprehensive approach ensures no part of the vital corridor is left unexamined. According to an official NHAI statement, the findings from these rigorous field and laboratory studies will form the basis for a complete re-evaluation of the design and construction methodologies used for all RS walls along the highway.

Commitment to Remedial Action and Safety

The NHAI has made a firm commitment to act decisively on the audit's findings. Wherever the investigation identifies any deficiencies or shortcomings, the authority will implement necessary remedial measures. This could include the complete dismantling and reconstruction of structures to ensure there is no compromise on quality or safety standards.

In a parallel effort to bolster safety protocols, NHAI is also expanding its program of independent safety audits. It is engaging expert agencies like RITES for this purpose. While these audits were initially commissioned for specific projects such as the Aroor-Thuravoor elevated road, they are now being extended to other sections of NH-66.

The objective is clear: to proactively identify any systemic issues related to construction practices, material quality, or safety protocols. This proactive stance aims to address potential problems before they escalate into risks for highway workers or the commuting public.

A Long-Term Vision for Kerala's Connectivity

The NHAI statement framed these measures as part of a larger, forward-looking commitment. It emphasized that NH-66 is being built not merely to meet current traffic demands but to serve the state of Kerala safely and reliably for decades to come.

The corridor is envisioned as a model of infrastructure development that combines ambition with rigorous scientific oversight, continuous monitoring, and timely corrections. "Engineered with scientific rigour, continuously monitored and corrected wherever necessary, the corridor exemplifies a maturing approach to infrastructure development that aligns ambition with safety and accountability," the statement noted.

As the NH-66 project advances, it stands as a testament to the potential of modern national highway frameworks to act as instruments of inclusive growth. The NHAI reiterated that this national artery is more than just a connectivity project; it is a long-term investment in building a safer, stronger, and better-connected Kerala for the future.
