The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of the boiler explosion at the Vedanta power plant in Chhattisgarh's Sakti district, even as the death toll rose to 25 after one more injured worker succumbed during treatment on Friday.
NHRC Issues Notices to State Authorities
Taking note of media reports on the incident, the NHRC has issued notices to the Chhattisgarh chief secretary and the director general of police (DGP), seeking a detailed report within two weeks. The Commission observed that the incident, if true, raises serious concerns of human rights violations.
Details Sought on Compensation and Health Status
The NHRC has asked the state government to furnish details on compensation disbursed to the victims' families and the current health status of the injured workers. The Commission has also sought information on the measures taken to prevent such incidents in the future.
The latest victim was identified as Biswajit Sahu, who was undergoing treatment in Raipur. Officials said he suffered a second cardiac arrest and could not be revived despite CPR and defibrillation efforts. The explosion at the Singhitarai-based plant released hot steam, affecting 35 workers. Of these, 25 have died so far, three remain critical, five are under observation, and two have been discharged.
Background of the Incident
The boiler explosion occurred on April 14 at the Vedanta power plant in Sakti district. The blast released high-pressure steam, causing severe burn injuries to workers. Emergency response teams rushed the injured to nearby hospitals, but many succumbed to their injuries over the following days.
The NHRC's intervention underscores the gravity of the incident and the need for accountability. The Commission has directed the authorities to ensure adequate medical care for the injured and expedite compensation for the families of the deceased.
