Nagpur: Nearly three years after the devastating September 2023 floods wreaked havoc across Nagpur and exposed critical weaknesses in the city's flood-control infrastructure, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has estimated that Rs1,128.14 crore is needed to protect the city from a similar disaster.
Seeking funding under the Disaster Mitigation Scheme, municipal commissioner Vipin Itankar submitted a proposal to the district administration on June 4, warning that thousands of residents living along the Ambazari Lake catchment, Nag River, Pili River, Pohra River, and North Canal remain vulnerable to flooding during extreme rainfall. The proposal notes that many of the deficiencies exposed by the deluge remain unresolved.
The unprecedented rainfall breached riverbanks, inundated large parts of the city, and caused extensive damage to homes and public infrastructure, particularly in areas downstream of Ambazari Lake and along the Nag River. With extreme weather events becoming more frequent, officials believe the threat of a similar disaster remains substantial.
Proposed Structural Interventions
To address these risks, NMC has proposed Rs856.32 crore worth of structural interventions, including retaining walls along rivers and nullahs, new bridges, channel deepening, and other flood-mitigation works. The civic body has argued that these measures are essential to safeguard residents living in vulnerable locations.
Fire and Emergency Services Enhancement
Apart from infrastructure projects, NMC has sought Rs149.4 crore to strengthen the capabilities of its fire and emergency services department. The proposal includes procurement of specialised equipment such as victim-location cameras capable of detecting people trapped inside collapsed structures, life detectors for locating survivors beneath debris, multi-gas detectors, glass-management kits, leak-sealing systems for industrial emergencies, hydraulic rescue tools, pneumatic lifting bags, rope launchers, power rescue boats, firefighting drones, and robotic rescue boats.
Flood-Management Machinery
NMC has also sought Rs122.42 crore for flood-management machinery, including suction-cum-jetting machines, dewatering pumps, emergency dewatering vehicles, and excavators required for desilting rivers and stormwater drains.
If sanctioned, it would mark one of the largest disaster-mitigation investments ever proposed by NMC.
