Noida Administration Launches LPG Camps for Factory Workers After Labor Unrest
In response to recent labor protests and concerns over household burdens, the Noida district administration has commenced specialized camps to distribute Free Trade LPG (FTL) cylinders directly to factory workers and migrant laborers. This initiative aims to bridge supply gaps and combat the black marketing of smaller "chotu" cylinders that have exacerbated living costs for low-income families.
Coordinated Effort with Oil Companies
Officials have confirmed that these camps are being conducted in close coordination with major oil corporations, including Indian Oil Corporation Limited and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited. The primary objective is to ensure that LPG cylinders reach end-users without intermediaries, thereby enhancing accessibility and affordability. Workers who currently lack an LPG connection are being registered on-site for new connections, with documentation and verification processes streamlined at industrial locations to maximize participation.
Background of Labor Unrest
The move follows days of labor unrest in parts of Noida, where protests began on April 11 and escalated to violence on April 13. Workers highlighted multiple grievances, including low wages, extended working hours, and the escalating cost and limited availability of LPG cylinders. District Supply Officer Smriti Gautam explained to TOI that the camps were initiated on Friday after the protests subsided, focusing specifically on industrial zones to address the immediate needs of factory employees.
Targeted Distribution in Industrial Areas
Camps are being strategically held in key industrial areas such as Sector 63, Phase-2, and NSEZ. While FTL cylinders have been distributed by social organizations and gas agencies across the district since April 8 for migrant laborers and others without connections, the administration has now intensified efforts in industrial clusters post-unrest. This targeted approach aims to alleviate the financial strain on workers, who have identified LPG costs as a significant household expense.
Pricing and Distribution Details
The 5kg FTL cylinders are priced at Rs 1,550, which includes a refundable security deposit of Rs 900. This deposit can be reclaimed upon returning the empty cylinder, with the remaining Rs 650 covering the cost of the gas. Since the camps began on Friday, over 500 FTL cylinders have been distributed in industrial areas, contributing to a total of more than 4,000 cylinders distributed district-wide since April 8. Authorities plan to expand this outreach to additional industrial clusters in the coming days.
Future Expansion Plans
District Supply Officer Smriti Gautam announced that approximately 50 more camps are scheduled in the near future, to be conducted directly at factories and industrial sites. This expansion is part of a broader strategy to ensure that all factory workers and migrant laborers have access to affordable LPG, thereby improving their quality of life and reducing reliance on black market alternatives. The administration's proactive measures underscore a commitment to addressing grassroots issues and fostering stability in the region's labor force.
