A Lok Adalat held in Gurugram on Saturday successfully settled over 74,000 cases, providing a significant boost to the alternative dispute resolution mechanism. The event, organized by the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), saw a large number of litigants opting for amicable settlement of their disputes.
Breakdown of Cases
Among the settled cases, the majority were traffic challans, with over 60,000 cases resolved. Other categories included bank recovery cases, family disputes, and petty criminal cases. The total amount involved in the settlements was approximately Rs 10 crore.
Traffic Challans
The highest number of cases pertained to traffic challans, where offenders paid compounded fines to avoid further legal proceedings. This helped in clearing the backlog of pending challans in the courts.
Bank Recovery Cases
Several bank recovery cases were also settled, with borrowers agreeing to pay their dues in installments. This provided relief to both banks and defaulting customers.
Speedy Justice
The Lok Adalat emphasized the importance of speedy and inexpensive justice. Judges and legal experts encouraged parties to resolve disputes through mediation and conciliation rather than prolonged litigation.
The DLSA officials expressed satisfaction with the turnout and the number of cases settled. They plan to organize more such camps in the future to reduce the burden on regular courts.
