Highway Expansion Stalled by Land Acquisition Delays
Motorists in Chikkamagaluru continue to face inconvenience as highway expansion works remain overdue. The project, which aims to widen key stretches of the national highway, has been stalled due to delays in the land acquisition process. Officials confirmed that work can only begin after the acquired land is handed over to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
Impact on Daily Commuters
The delay has led to persistent traffic congestion and safety concerns for daily commuters. Local residents have expressed frustration, with many citing increased travel times and poor road conditions. According to a commuter, “The highway is crucial for us, but the delays are making our lives difficult.”
Official Statement on Progress
A senior official from the state Public Works Department stated, “The land acquisition process is underway, and we are coordinating with the revenue department to expedite the handover. Once NHAI receives the land, construction can start immediately.” The official did not provide a specific timeline for completion.
Project Details and Funding
The highway expansion project is part of a larger infrastructure initiative to improve connectivity in the Malnad region. The project has a budget of approximately ₹500 crore and is expected to be completed within 24 months of commencement. However, the land acquisition phase has already exceeded its original deadline by six months.
Government Response
In response to public concerns, the district administration has assured that efforts are being made to resolve the issue. A meeting was held last week with NHAI officials and local landowners to address pending compensation claims. The government has also issued a notice to complete the acquisition within three months.
