PCB Issues Show-Cause Notices to Two Indore Distilleries Over Pollution Norm Violations
PCB Issues Show-Cause Notices to Two Indore Distilleries

The regional office of the Pollution Control Board (PCB) has issued show-cause notices to two distilleries located in the Indore district for allegedly violating pollution norms. According to officials, the distilleries failed to operate the dryers required to convert wet waste into distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS), which is a commercially valuable ingredient used in cattle and poultry feed.

Inspections Reveal Non-Compliance

The action was taken following inspections conducted by the PCB, during which it was discovered that the units were not using dryers and were not processing wet waste into DDGS. This practice is mandated under the environmental norms to prevent pollution. Satish Kumar Chouksey, the Indore regional officer of the board, confirmed that show-cause notices were served to the units for these violations.

Mandatory Zero Liquid Discharge Norms

Officials emphasized that both grain-based and molasses-based distilleries are required to comply with the mandatory zero liquid discharge (ZLD) norms laid down by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and state pollution boards. These norms are designed to minimize environmental harm from industrial operations.

Environmental Risks of Non-Compliance

Pollution authorities highlighted that the failure to dry and process wet waste often leads to its storage in the open. This practice can potentially result in groundwater contamination and air pollution, thereby violating prescribed environmental standards. The board's action underscores the importance of adhering to pollution control measures to protect the environment and public health.

The distilleries have been given a specified period to respond to the notices and explain their non-compliance. Further action may be taken based on their responses and subsequent compliance with the norms.
