The Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) in Rajasthan intensified its enforcement and repair efforts during the fifth state-level special campaign on Saturday, resulting in the disconnection of 1,140 illegal water connections across the state. This weekly drive, conducted every Saturday until June 30, aims to address drinking water issues that worsen during the peak summer season.
Penalties and Legal Action
During the drive against illegal connections, PHED officials imposed penalties totaling approximately Rs 86.58 lakh. Additionally, First Information Reports (FIRs) were lodged against 18 individuals for illegal water use and theft, according to a PHED official. The action is intended to curb water losses, prevent theft, and ensure equitable distribution, particularly in rural and high-demand areas.
Repair and Restoration Works
Alongside enforcement, the department carried out extensive repair and restoration works. During the campaign, 732 defunct handpumps were repaired and made operational, while 398 pipeline leakages were fixed to reduce wastage and improve supply pressure. PHED teams also completed 1,275 drinking water-related repair and improvement works to strengthen rural infrastructure.
Complaint Resolution and Deployment
Officials reported that 3,427 complaints were resolved on the spot during the drive. A total of 519 special teams were deployed for the campaign on Saturday, as stated by another official. The comprehensive efforts highlight the department's commitment to addressing water scarcity and ensuring efficient water management across Rajasthan.
