Police Rescue Businessman from Abduction in Garo Hills

Shillong: The North Garo Hills district police successfully thwarted an abduction attempt and rescued a local businessman in a swift and coordinated operation, officials confirmed on Monday.

A statement from the office of the Superintendent of Police detailed that the incident occurred at 3:00 PM on Saturday. The Bajengdoba Police Station received information from villagers in the Bolsong area that unidentified individuals were abducting a businessman in a car.

Acting promptly on the tip-off, a police team from Bajengdoba established a checkpoint at Mansinggre. Around 3:30 PM, they intercepted a suspected vehicle along with the victim's motorcycle, which was being ridden by one of the accused. The abducted businessman was found inside the vehicle and rescued unharmed.

Preliminary investigations revealed that three miscreants had intercepted the victim along the Bolsong-Agia road. They forcibly stopped him, snatched his motorcycle key and mobile phone, demanded his trading license, and searched him before robbing him of Rs 30,000. The abductors then forced the businessman into their vehicle, while one of them rode his motorcycle alongside. The victim raised an alarm, prompting nearby villagers to alert the police.

Police identified and arrested the three accused: Tenggra Ch Marak alias Togan (36), a resident of South Garo Hills; Dipon D Sangma (38); and Lovingson R. Marak (33), both from West Garo Hills. During interrogation, the prime accused, Tenggra Marak, claimed links with an organization named United Garo People's Forum, although police have not confirmed the nature of this association.
