Porvorim Traffic: New Diversion to Begin in 10-15 Days, Town Square Project by Aug 15
Porvorim Traffic: New Diversion Soon, Town Square by Aug 15

Panaji: Traffic congestion has become a regular feature in Porvorim since diversions were introduced two years ago for the construction of the six-lane highway corridor. As residents grapple with the situation, another diversion is set to come into effect, with the service road currently functioning as the main carriageway towards Panaji likely to be closed within the next fortnight.

Review of Town Square Project

Tourism minister and Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte on Tuesday reviewed the progress of the centre-funded Rs 120 crore town square project with officials. He directed that the road opposite the project, near the SCERT building, be closed to facilitate the construction of a cobblestone road in place of the existing tarred stretch.

“We have set, ambitiously, a deadline of Aug 15 for the town square project to be completed. The new road diversion notification will be issued by the collector soon,” Khaunte said.

Revised Traffic Plan

Officials said that once the road is closed, the carriageway currently used by vehicles travelling from Panaji towards Porvorim, opposite Hotel Majestic, will be used for traffic heading towards Panaji.

Khaunte also directed PWD officials to expedite the construction of cross-drains near the Brahmakumaris building so that the road can be opened for traffic moving towards Mapusa under the revised diversion plan. “He has directed that the new diversion be implemented within 10 days. As some work is still pending, it could take around 12 to 15 days for the diversion to come into effect,” an official said.

Interdepartmental Coordination

Officials from the PWD, sewerage corporation, tourism department and other agencies attended the review meeting to resolve interdepartmental issues affecting the project, Khaunte said.
