Pune district collector Jitendra Dudi has instructed all departments involved in road safety to conduct joint inspections of accident-prone black spots across the district and submit detailed reports with short- and long-term remedial measures by June 29. This move is part of intensified efforts to curb fatalities.
Meeting Highlights
Dudi chaired a meeting of the district road safety committee on Monday. He emphasized the priority of reducing deaths from road accidents in Pune city, Pimpri Chinchwad, and rural areas. Officials from the police department, Regional Transport Office, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Public Works Department (PWD), Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation, and representatives of social organizations were instructed to undertake joint inspections of accident-prone locations and identify contributing factors.
On-Site Inspections and Interventions
The collector stated that all concerned departments should carry out detailed on-site inspections of black spots, making micro-level observations to suggest immediate and long-term interventions. A review meeting will be held shortly to assess findings and decide on further action. Dudi warned, "We will not tolerate any negligence in implementing suggested measures."
Stricter Enforcement
Dudi called for stricter enforcement of traffic rules and said stringent action should be taken against violators to improve road discipline. Referring to the accident-prone Navale Bridge stretch on the Mumbai-Bengaluru highway, he instructed NHAI to implement previously recommended safety measures. He assured that funds would be made available for required works. Additionally, he informed TOI that IIT Delhi is expected to submit its report on the matter soon.
Police Perspective
District superintendent of police Sandeep Gill said reducing road accidents remains a priority in line with Supreme Court directives. He suggested installing large awareness signboards near toll plazas on national highways to alert motorists and improve safety. Gill noted that the district rural police will soon prepare and share a list of accident-prone locations. Based on this list, joint inspections involving officials from all concerned departments will be organized. He stated that violation of rules remains a principal cause of traffic congestion and accidents, urging motorists to practice self-discipline on the roads.
Officials from the transport department, PWD, police administration, and social organizations also briefed the committee on the subject.
