Pune: Residents in Shivajinagar, Deccan Gymkhana, Model Colony, Prabhat Road, Aundh, and parts of Baner-Balewadi faced water cuts after the alternate-day (odd-even) schedule came into effect on Monday. The state irrigation department also stopped discharge into the Mutha canal for rural regions to preserve drinking water.
These measures come amid a delayed monsoon and an anticipated shortage caused by the adverse effects of El Nino on this year’s rainfall. Officials reported that only 4.2 TMC of live water stock remained across four dams, which will be reserved to meet drinking water needs of Pune and nearby towns until the end of August.
While Monday marked the first day of restrictions and the impact was limited, residents said the real effects would be felt in the coming days. Amar Patil from Aundh noted that restoring supply the next day at full pressure would be a challenge. “Empty pipelines can lead to airlocks and valve malfunctions. Authorities need to monitor the system closely every day,” he said.
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) had announced the water cut schedule last week, prompting households to store water. Ashok Das, a Shivajinagar resident, said supply was stopped on Monday morning. “We prepared in advance, but the administration must strictly follow the schedule to avoid confusion and shortage,” he said.
PMC officials, however, said no major issues were reported on the first day. Monitoring teams have been deployed in all zones, and engineers have been instructed to respond quickly to any disruptions. “We expect clearer feedback from Tuesday and will continue close monitoring to address any discrepancies,” an official said.
As part of conservation measures, PMC has ordered vehicle washing centres to shut and restricted the use of drinking water at construction sites. Nandkishor Jagtap, head of the PMC water supply department, said, “Strict action would be taken against those violating the guidelines.”
Pipeline Leaks Add to Concerns
Residents also highlighted pipeline leakages and breaches as a major challenge during the water cuts. A recent pipeline breach on Paud Road resulted in significant water loss. The residents have urged PMC to take immediate steps to prevent such incidents and curb wastage.
