Ahead of the massive Magh Mela pilgrimage in 2026, senior railway officials have initiated a comprehensive review of critical infrastructure. Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Varanasi, Ashish Jain, personally conducted a detailed inspection of the Banaras–Prayagraj Rambagh rail section to assess preparedness.
Focused Review at Jhunsi Station
The inspection began with a window trailing safety review along the rail route. Upon reaching Jhunsi railway station, DRM Jain undertook a thorough assessment of the arrangements being put in place for the upcoming religious gathering. His review was meticulous, covering several key areas essential for handling the influx of pilgrims.
He examined the CCTV surveillance systems installed in passenger holding areas and checked the provisions for proper waste management at temporary passenger shelters. Ensuring the welfare of staff, Jain also inspected the facilities for on-duty personnel, including the supply of blankets, sheets, and bed rolls. He directed the concerned officials to expedite all ongoing Mela-related works at Jhunsi station. Furthermore, crowd management strategies were a key point of discussion during his visit to the Mela control room.
Comprehensive Check at Prayagraj Rambagh Station
Subsequently, traveling via an inspection special train, the DRM arrived at Prayagraj Rambagh station. Here, the inspection scope widened to encompass almost every passenger-facing facility. The review included:
- Platforms and foot overbridges
- Waiting halls and passenger shelters
- Water booths and ticket counters (UTS & PRS)
- The station building and circulating area
- Entry-exit routes and overall security arrangements
A notable point of inspection was the restoration of passenger shelter facilities that were originally created for the Maha Kumbh, intended for reuse during the Magh Mela, ensuring cost-effective and efficient resource utilization.
Directives for Enhanced Pilgrim Experience
Based on his observations, DRM Ashish Jain issued clear instructions to the railway officials. He emphasized the need to enhance several areas to ensure a seamless experience for the devotees. The directives focused on:
Strengthening CCTV monitoring across the stations for improved security. Increasing seating arrangements to accommodate large crowds comfortably. Reinforcing cleanliness drives and robust crowd management protocols. Ensuring full preparedness for operating special Mela trains, emergency response systems, and disaster management plans during the event period.
According to ECR Public Relations Officer Ashok Kumar, the primary aim of this extensive inspection was to guarantee safe, smooth, and convenient rail travel for the millions of pilgrims expected to attend the Magh Mela in 2026. This proactive approach highlights the railways' commitment to managing one of the world's largest religious gatherings efficiently.
