Ranchi is set to implement a series of measures to alleviate chronic traffic congestion from Radium Chowk through Kutchery Road to New Market and adjoining areas. Officials plan to widen roads, relocate electric poles, clear blocked left turns, regulate auto-rickshaws, curb illegal parking and fee collection, and remove encroachments.
Infrastructure Interventions Planned
On Thursday, a joint team from the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) and the traffic police conducted an inspection to identify obstacles and propose interventions to improve traffic flow along the corridor. Key proposals include widening a single-lane road near Zakir Hussain Park into two lanes and constructing a roundabout there to enhance traffic movement.
Additional Steps
Other measures involve shifting electric poles, developing a double-lane carriageway near the Naga Baba Khatal vegetable market by realigning the boundary, and clearing critical junctions such as Ratu Road. Traffic SP Rakesh Singh stated that the plan focuses on resolving structural issues and enforcing regulations. Illegal parking will be fined on the spot, and strict action will be taken against unauthorized parking fee collectors. Designated parking areas and proper auto-rickshaw stands will be introduced.
The RMC also aims to improve the Kishori Yadav Chowk–Pinjrapole stretch to reduce pressure on nearby roads. A roundabout near the Ratu Road flyover is proposed, and auto-rickshaws will be allowed to operate only from fixed stands. Additionally, a pink auto service for women is in the works.
Immediate and Long-Term Measures
RMC Deputy Municipal Commissioner Gautam Prasad Sahu said the civic body has lined up immediate execution measures alongside long-term planning. “A week-long anti-encroachment drive will be carried out along Kutchery Road, New Market, and the Atal Vendor Market stretch to clear roadside obstructions. Simultaneously, proposals related to road widening and improved traffic design are being fast-tracked to ensure more durable relief from congestion,” he said.
