Ranchi Police & IOC Build 10 Modern Traffic Posts with Toilets, Rest Areas
Ranchi Traffic Posts Get Major Revamp with IOC Support

In a significant move to improve working conditions for its traffic personnel, the Ranchi police administration has joined hands with the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) to revamp traffic posts across the city. The initiative will see the construction of modern camps equipped with essential facilities like toilets, eating spaces, and shelters from harsh weather.

Addressing Long-Standing Challenges for Traffic Personnel

The step addresses critical issues faced by traffic constables who currently perform duties for stretches of 12 hours. These personnel often struggle without a proper place to take shelter during heavy rain or extreme heat. A particularly pressing issue has been for women constables, who constitute 60% of the total traffic police strength in Ranchi, and have faced difficult situations when needing to attend to nature's call while on duty.

First Model Post Ready at Sujata Chowk

The first of these new-generation traffic posts is already complete and awaiting formal inauguration at Sujata Chowk, a central location in the city. This model structure features two separate toilets—one for women and one for men. It also includes a dedicated space where constables can have their meals and rest briefly during their long shifts.

Inspector General (South Chhotanagpur) Manoj Kaushik, who is supervising the plan's implementation, stated that the project is part of IOC's corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme. "The IOC had approached us to construct such camps at 10 places in the city. The infrastructure would ensure the basic needs for traffic personnel, which in turn would boost their morale," Kaushik explained.

Expansion Plans and Locations

Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Rakesh Singh provided further details, noting that the buildings will be constructed at posts where sufficient space is available and after obtaining no-objection certificates from the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC). The identified locations for the initial 10 posts include:

  • Sujata Chowk
  • Argora Chowk
  • Piska More
  • Xavier More
  • Shalimar market

SP Singh revealed that the traffic wing is also in talks with other companies to undertake similar initiatives. He expressed optimism that 25 to 30 traffic posts across Ranchi could be equipped with such facilities within approximately four months. "Banks have also expressed a desire to participate in this programme," he added, indicating potential for wider collaboration.

The immediate benefits are already being felt. Binod Kumar Singh, a traffic officer posted at Sujata Chowk, highlighted the previous dire conditions: "During monsoon, rainwater carrying human excreta floods our current camp, forcing us to take shelter in shops and other places. Now, we have a suitable place to protect ourselves." This revamp promises to bring much-needed dignity and basic comfort to the frontline personnel managing Ranchi's bustling streets.
