Raut seeks Zojila Tunnel named after war hero, Kashmir ruler

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut has proposed that the portals of the Zojila Tunnel be named after a hero of the 1947-48 Indo-Pak war and an 8th-century ruler of Kashmir. The tunnel, a critical infrastructure project in Ladakh, is expected to be opened to the public in February 2028, according to officials.

Raut's proposal on social media

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Raut urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to consider naming the tunnel's eastern and western portals after two historical figures. He suggested that one portal be named after Brigadier Rajinder Singh, who was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra for his bravery during the 1947-48 war, and the other after Lalitaditya Muktapida, an 8th-century ruler of the Karkota dynasty known for his extensive conquests and contributions to Kashmir's architecture and culture.

Raut wrote: "Hon. Pradhan Mantri ji, the Zojila Tunnel is a monumental project. I request that its eastern portal be named after Brigadier Rajinder Singh, the hero of the 1947-48 war, and the western portal after Maharaja Lalitaditya Muktapida, the great 8th-century ruler of Kashmir. This would honor our history and inspire future generations."

Significance of the Zojila Tunnel

The Zojila Tunnel, located at an altitude of about 11,500 feet on the Srinagar-Leh highway, is being constructed to provide all-weather connectivity between Ladakh and the Kashmir Valley. Currently, the Zojila Pass remains closed during winter due to heavy snowfall, isolating Ladakh for months. The 14.15-kilometer-long tunnel will reduce travel time and ensure year-round access, boosting tourism and economic activity in the region.

The project, costing over Rs 6,800 crore, is being executed by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL). Once completed, it will be Asia's longest bi-directional tunnel. Officials have confirmed that the tunnel is on track for its February 2028 deadline.

Historical figures proposed

Brigadier Rajinder Singh, a decorated officer of the Indian Army, played a pivotal role in defending the Kashmir Valley during the first Indo-Pak war. He was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra for his leadership and sacrifice. Lalitaditya Muktapida, who ruled from 724 to 760 CE, is celebrated for expanding the Karkota empire across northern India and Central Asia, and for commissioning architectural marvels like the Martand Sun Temple.

Raut's suggestion has sparked discussions about naming infrastructure after historical and military figures. While no official response has been received from the government, the proposal highlights the cultural and historical significance of the region.
