Tamil Nadu Closes 10 Tasmac Shops in Trichy Near Sensitive Areas

Trichy: As part of the Tamil Nadu government's ongoing drive to close Tasmac liquor shops located near sensitive areas, at least 10 outlets have been shut down across Trichy district so far.

Details of Closures

The closures were carried out in Thuvarankurichi, Manapparai, Thuraiyur, Thottiyam, Srirangam, Trichy East, and Trichy West. The directive aims to shut 717 Tasmac shops located within 500 meters of schools, colleges, places of worship, and bus stands.

The first outlet to be closed in the district was an elite Tasmac shop located near Chathiram bus stand on May 12.

Remaining Outlets

According to sources, a total of 16 outlets have been identified for closure in Trichy district due to their proximity to sensitive locations. The remaining six outlets will be inspected and shut down in the coming days.

Background and Public Demand

The decision stems from long-standing public demands to relocate liquor shops away from the vicinity of educational institutions, temples, and bus stands. Local residents have frequently complained that easy access to alcohol in these areas has contributed to increased drunken disturbances and rising addiction among young people.

Reactions

The initiative has received widespread support from activists, parents, and devotees on social media, who have described it as a welcome step towards safer public spaces. However, some small traders and businesses operating near the outlets have voiced concerns about potential loss of income and reduced footfall.

The government aims to complete the closure of all identified shops in the district within the next few weeks, ensuring compliance with the new guidelines.
