A tragic incident occurred on Monday afternoon when a teenager drowned while bathing in the Ganga at Parmat Ghat in the Gwaltoli police station area of Kanpur. The victim, along with two friends, had gone to the river for a bath. According to reports, three friends entered the water, and two of them began to struggle and started drowning.
Upon hearing their cries for help, people in the vicinity raised an alarm. Local divers quickly jumped into the river and managed to rescue one of the youths. However, the other teenager could not be saved and drowned. The Gwaltoli police arrived at the scene and initiated a search operation with the help of divers. The police also informed the victim's family about the incident.
Sequence of Events
The teenager had left his home at 3 pm with his friends, initially heading towards Green Park. It was during this outing that one of the youths suggested going to Parmat Ghat for a bath, as told by the friends to the police. The three friends then proceeded to the ghat.
While bathing, two of them attempted to cross the Ganga on foot to reach the other side, with the third friend following them. Suddenly, two of them started drowning. They raised an alarm, prompting divers to jump in and pull one of them to safety. Unfortunately, the other youth drowned. After approximately 30 minutes of intense search efforts, the body of the teenager was finally fished out of the river.
Police Investigation
ACP Colonelganj Chitranshu confirmed that the matter is under investigation. The police are looking into the circumstances leading to the drowning and have recorded statements from the rescued friend and other witnesses. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination.
This incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, highlighting the dangers of bathing in the Ganga without proper precautions. Authorities have urged citizens to avoid venturing into deep waters and to be cautious while swimming or bathing in rivers.
