The blaze, which started in the early hours, rapidly spread through the crowded commercial complex, prompting a major rescue operation by the fire department.
Fire Breaks Out in Thane Market
The fire was first reported at around 3:30 AM in a multi-story building housing several shops in the Kalwa area of Thane. Thane Municipal Corporation officials stated that the fire quickly engulfed the structure, sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky. Over 20 fire engines and numerous ambulances were rushed to the spot to combat the inferno and rescue trapped individuals.
Casualties and Injuries
Tragically, two people lost their lives in the incident. One of the deceased was identified as a fireman who was part of the rescue team. The other victim was a civilian, whose identity is yet to be confirmed. Several other people sustained injuries and were admitted to nearby hospitals for treatment. The injured include firefighters and shop owners who attempted to salvage their goods.
Rescue and Containment Efforts
The fire department worked tirelessly for hours to bring the blaze under control. Firefighters used hydraulic platforms and water jets to douse the flames from multiple angles. The narrow lanes of the market made it challenging for fire engines to maneuver, but the teams managed to contain the fire by morning. Cooling operations continued throughout the day to prevent re-ignition.
Investigation and Aftermath
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire. Preliminary reports suggest a short circuit may have triggered the blaze, but a thorough inquiry is underway. The building, which housed several textile and electronic shops, suffered extensive damage. The Thane Municipal Corporation has announced compensation for the families of the deceased and assured strict action against any negligence.
The incident has raised concerns about fire safety in commercial establishments in Thane. Local residents and traders have demanded stricter enforcement of fire safety norms and regular inspections to prevent such tragedies in the future.
