Tinsukia DC Inspects NH-15 Accident Zones, Orders Safety Steps

Dibrugarh: Tinsukia district commissioner Sumit Sattawan, accompanied by SSP Mayank Kumar and officials from several departments concerned, conducted a thorough inspection of multiple accident-prone stretches along NH-15 in the district on Saturday.

The inspection covered key locations, including Makum, Borhapjan, Bishakopie, Rupai Siding (Old AT Road) and the Samdang Bypass — stretches that have long been flagged as high-risk zones due to frequent road mishaps. The exercise aimed to take stock of existing road safety infrastructure and identify gaps that need urgent attention.

During the inspection, DC Sattawan directed the Public Works Department (Roads) to expedite the installation of speed breakers, traffic signage and road markings at critical points along the highway. He stressed that these measures must be implemented without delay, given the alarming frequency of accidents reported in the area.

The DC also issued strict directives to law enforcement officials to launch a sustained crackdown on traffic violators, particularly targeting drivers who overspeed and those riding two-wheelers without helmets. He made clear that such violations, which are among the leading causes of road fatalities, would attract stringent legal action.

SSP Kumar said police would step up patrolling and enforcement drives along NH-15. “We will be intensifying our presence on these stretches and will show zero tolerance for reckless driving and helmet violations. The safety of commuters and pedestrians is our top priority,” he said.

The officials engaged with residents, commuters and pedestrians along the inspection route to raise awareness about the importance of wearing helmets, adhering to speed limits and following traffic rules.
