TN doctors demand surgical castration for sex assault convicts

The Tenkasi district unit of the Tamil Nadu Government Doctors Association has passed a special resolution calling on the state government to enact legislation mandating surgical removal of genitalia for men convicted of sexually assaulting and murdering women and children. The resolution, moved under the chairmanship of district secretary Dr R Jeslin, who also serves as the association's state secretary (DMS), proposes total penilectomy and chemical or surgical castration as additional punishments to be imposed alongside court verdicts in such heinous cases.

Motivation Behind the Resolution

The resolution cites the severe psychological toll that post-mortem examinations of sexual assault and murder victims take on government doctors as a driving motivation. It states that doctors who conduct autopsies on such victims suffer unspeakable grief and severe mental distress, making the proposed measure urgently necessary for the times. The association emphasized that the current legal framework is insufficient to deter such crimes and that stronger punitive measures are needed to protect women and children.

Demands and Next Steps

In addition to the castration demand, the association has called on the government to enact strong laws to ensure swift justice and stricter punishments. The resolution was passed at the general body meeting of the Tenkasi district unit, with members unanimously supporting the move. The association plans to submit the resolution to the state health minister and chief minister for consideration.
