Madurai: Tamil Nadu Highways Department Road Workers Union Urges Scrapping of Privatisation

The Tamil Nadu Highways Department Road Workers Union has called on the newly formed TVK-led government to abandon privatisation efforts within the department, fill thousands of vacant positions, and release overdue funds for road maintenance projects.

Union general secretary A Amsaraj stated that while the organisation welcomes the change in government, it expects a reversal of policies implemented over the last two decades. He criticised the two major parties that have governed Tamil Nadu for more than 50 years for failing to fill government vacancies, promoting contract employment, and abolishing permanent posts in various sectors.

Amsaraj alleged that privatisation measures introduced in the department since 2002 have reduced employment opportunities. He urged the government to revoke the order establishing the State Highways Authority, warning that allowing it to function would enable private companies to set up toll plazas on state highways and exploit the public.

He further noted that many engineering graduates and educated youths employed in maintenance projects are facing difficulties due to the lack of systematic recruitment. The union demands immediate action to address these issues and ensure fair employment practices.
